Educational Leadership Preparation Learning Community
The Education Leadership (EL) Preparation Learning Community is a group of approximately 85-90 education leaders from throughout the state of Louisiana. There are 14 universities and 3 private providers who offer either master’s degrees and/or certification programs in Educational Leadership. Each of these program providers was invited to bring together a team for continuous learning, funded by The Wallace Foundation grant.
Each team consists of the following:
- College of Education Dean or her/his representative,
- EL Chair,
- EL Faculty Member,
- A District Superintendent or her/his designee, and
- A School Principal.
Topics that the EL Preparation Learning Community has addressed thus far are:
- SREB’s Core Conditions and Indicators of Program Redesign instrument for assessing each institution’s progress in living out their redesigned EL programs
- The NCATE Assessment for program accreditation, and
- The Vanderbilt Assessment for Leaders in Education (VAL-ED) – this assessment is utilized by districts in evaluating their principals in order to better plan for their professional development. It was piloted in 2009-2010 by Rapides, Caddo, Lafayette and the Recovery School District (RSD). In 2010-2011, over 325 schools will utilize the VAL-ED across the state with the ultimate goals of providing evidence for support of Louisiana’s leader, followed by aligned professional development.
Topics that EL Preparation Learning Community will address Fall 2010:
- EL teams will address both program improvement and program evaluation in Alexandria, LA at the Wesley Retreat Center, centered upon these issues:
- The components of an Educational Leadership Program Evaluation System for all EL certification programs in LA.
- Trends in El programs across LA as evidenced by self ratings on the Core Conditions and Indicators of Program Redesign pre and post document scores.
- ACT 54 – Discussion of the new law to evaluate teachers and educational leaders in LA
- Deeper collaborative relationships between universities and districts
The Wallace Foundation is committed to improving educational leadership in the schools across the nation, and Louisiana is fortunate to be a recipient of a Wallace Foundation grant. The Wallace Foundation has graciously chosen to extend Louisiana’s grant until March of 2011 in order to more fully bring all grant components to fruition with a sustainability plan for the future that supports Louisiana’s leaders.
